Is divorce permitted by Jesus Christ?

Asked by: Joel Alberto Plete Diaz

Bro. Joel Alberto: My question is about divorce. There are people saying that in the gospel Jesus Christ approved divorce?

Bro. Bryan Picoc: Brother Joel, please clarify your question about divorce. Could you please repeat it?

Bro. Joel Alberto: Are there people saying that divorce in Jesus Christ is accepted?

Bro. Bryan: If divorce is accepted (permitted) is this your question, brother?

Bro. Joel Alberto: Yes.

Bro Eli Soriano:

Brother, definitely, divorce is prohibited by the Lord Jesus Christ. In Matthew 19:5,

Matthew 19:5-6

and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

What God has joined together, let not man separate. It is very clear. Divorce is prohibited by our Lord Jesus Christ because the word divorce means to separate. Separate one from another. That is why it is very clear according to the law of our Lord Jesus Christ that divorce is not permitted.

During the time of Moses, the Jews told the Lord Jesus Christ, “Why did Moses allowed the separation?” Let us read –

Matthew 19:7-8

They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”

He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

The beginning that our Lord Jesus Christ was saying is the beginning in the garden of Eden when God declared after giving Eve to Adam, let us read in Genesis 2:23 –

Genesis 2:23-24

23 And Adam said:

This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

God declared when Adam accepted Eve that God gave him. The man said,

Genesis 2:23-24

23 And Adam said:

This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

The phrase: ”they shall become one flesh” was explained by the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 19:5, let us read –

Matthew 19:5-6

and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

That is why definitely it is prohibited by the Lord Jesus Christ. But, brother Joel, let us clarify the situation. The situation where divorce is not permitted is in a situation where the union is made by God. Not like the union made by pastors asking for money for the marriage. Just like the marriage done by the Catholic Church, the union done by the catholic church is not by God. Why? Because it is a union made by the caprices of the catholic priests, who are commercializing a thing which is sacred like the marriage. Marriage is a very sacred thing (ceremony) before the Lord. Let us read Hebrews 13:4 –

Hebrews 13:4

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

It is very clear. Marriage is a very sacred thing in the eyes of God. If the marriage is made in God’s way, divorce is not permitted.

But if you, Bro. Joel, is talking about things outside God’s way. For example if you were married in the manners of men, under the commandments of men, all that you are going to do under the men’s way or under the commandments of men are all invalid (in vain) before the eyes of God. Let us read in Mark 7:7 –

Mark 7:7

And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Including their worships are regarded by God as in vain. Including the worships made by them are regarded by God are worship in vain. Marriages, baptisms, religious rituals, made by men, in men’s way, under the the doctrines and commandments of men are all in vain according to our Lord Jesus Christ.

That is why we have to clarify that the marriage that is not permitted divorce or separation is the marriage made in God’s manner in the true Church in the bible, and not the the false churches established by men that are teaching doctrines and commandments of men. They are all in vain in the eyes of God.

If you are separated outside the understanding or outside the jurisdiction of the understanding of the doctrines of God in the bible, you are not considered under the law of Christ. Let us read the reason in Romans 3:19 –

Romans 3:19

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are UNDER THE LAW,

Amen.

Romans 3:19

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are UNDER THE LAW,

But, if you were under the law of men, the law of God is not applicable to you. The law of God is applicable for those under the law. If the divorce happened before the knowledge the true teachings of God then you have the hope of being pardoned even if divorce is prohibited. If you were not under the law of God, you can me pardoned.

Did you understand, brother Joel?

Brother Joel: Amen.

Brother Eli: Amen. Thanks be to God! May God bless you.

  1. Hermano, buenas noches, me llamo Rosa Razo, peruana.
