Must we keep the Sabbath?

Asked by: Bro. Antonio Rafael from Mexico, Mexico

Bro. Antonio: Brother, one question, the bible says we must work for six days and on the seventh day we must not work, we must rest, please guide me, is this correct or the church is not implementing it well.

Bro. Eli:

First of all, brother Antonio, all the commandments of God we must know to whom the commandments is addressed to, or to whom it is intended by God. The ten commandments, where the Sabbath is written, is intended for the Israelites and not for the Christians. Let us prove this. In Malachi 4:4, let us read –

Malachi 4:4

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

According to the Lord,

Malachi 4:4

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave …

from the Lord,

Malachi 4:4

the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

Which is the law of Moses mentioned in the bible? That law came from the Lord and given to Moses in Horeb. Horeb means mountain in Hebrew. Let us read in Exodus 31:18 –

Exodus 31:18

When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

The law given by God to Moses in the mountain or Horeb, particularly Mount Sinai, were the two tablets of stone.

Exodus 31:18

When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, HE GAVE him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

What were in those two tablets of stone which God gave to Moses in Horeb or in Sinai? In Deuteronomy 4:13 –

Deuteronomy 4:13

He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets.

It is very clear. What was written in the two tablets of stone were the ten commandments given by God to Moses for the Israelites. Let us repeat in Malachi 4:4, brother Daniel –

Malachi 4:4

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

What we call in the bible as the law of Moses are the ten commandments. The decrees and laws, the ten commandments, are written in two tablets of stone, called in the bible as the law of Moses FOR ALL ISRAEL. To prove this, let us read in Deuteronomy 5:1 –

Deuteronomy 5:1-14

Moses summoned all Israel and said:

Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them.

The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors[a] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fireon the mountain. (At that time I stood between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before[b] me.

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

11 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.

It is very clear, isn’t it? The covenant which God gave to Moses in Horeb are the ten commandments. It is very clear my brother in 5:1 –

Deuteronomy 5:2-12New International Version (NIV)

The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors[a] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fireon the mountain. (At that time I stood between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

12 “Observe the Sabbath…

That is the seventh day or Saturday. It is included in the covenant given to Moses by God in Horeb or in Sinai. These are the ten commandments called in the bible as the Law of Moses. Time will come where the Law of Moses will be changed. Let us read in Acts 13:39 –

Acts 13:39New International Version (NIV)

39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

In the Christian era, the believers will not be justified by the Law of Moses. By Him, by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Acts 13:39New International Version (NIV)

39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

That is why we are not under the Law of Moses. The Law which we have to obey in our time is in Galatians 6;2 –

Galatians 6:2

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

The Law of Christ is the law which we must follow or obey. In the Christian era, even our Lord Jesus Christ and the apostles did not observe the Sabbath. Let us read in Matthew 12:1 –

Matthew 12:1-2 New International Version (NIV)

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

Christ and the apostles according to the Jews who were observing the ten commandments said –

Matthew 12:2

…“Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

Why? Because our Lord Jesus Christ as our example did not observe the day of rest which is not a commandment for us but for the Israelites. Let us prove in Deuteronomy 5:15 –

Deuteronomy 5:15

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

Brother, please watch closely.

Deuteronomy 5:15

Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

For whom?

Deuteronomy 5:15

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

You, brother Antonio, were not a slave in Egypt. Therefore, to observe the day of rest intended by God for the Israelites is not for you. I hope that will be clear for you, brother Antonio.

Bro. Antonio: Thank you brother. You have cleared by doubts.

Bro. Eli: Thank you! May God bless you brother Antonio.
